What We Offer

Eye Emergencies

What Qualifies as an Eye Emergency?

It can be difficult to know if a symptom is "serious enough" for an emergency visit. Our rule of thumb is: if you are worried, we want to hear from you. Delaying treatment for a serious issue can lead to permanent complications.

Contact us immediately if you experience:

Sudden Vision Changes: Any loss of vision or the sudden onset of double vision.

Physical Trauma: A scratch (corneal abrasion) or a blunt hit to the eye.

Foreign Objects: Dust, metal shards, or glass that cannot be easily flushed out.

Chemical Exposure: Household cleaners or industrial chemicals splashed in the eye.

New "Flashes or Floaters": Sudden sparks of light or a "curtain" falling over your vision (signs of retinal issues).

Severe Pain or Swelling: Especially if it occurs after a recent eye surgery.

Skip the ER: Expert Care in Sherwood Park

Studies show that the vast majority of eye emergencies can be treated more effectively by an optometrist than in a general Emergency Room. We have the specialized microscopic tools (Slit Lamps) and diagnostic imaging required to see exactly what is happening inside your eye.

Why choose Aspen Eye Care for your emergency?

Immediate Triage: We prioritize urgent cases to get you in front of a doctor as quickly as possible.

Specialized Equipment: We can find microscopic foreign bodies or retinal tears that general ER tools might miss.

Follow-up Care: We manage your healing process from the initial injury through to full recovery.

Critical "Do's and Don'ts" While You Wait

If you are currently experiencing an eye emergency, please follow these safety steps until you can reach our office:

DON'T rub or apply pressure to the injured eye.

DON'T attempt to remove an embedded object yourself.

DON'T use tweezers, cotton swabs, or sharp instruments near the eye.

DO flush the eye gently with cool water or saline if you have splashed a chemical in it.

DO stay calm and call us at 587-400-2101 for immediate instructions.

Specialized Emergency Services

Chemical Burns

Chemical burns (alkalis or acids) are among the most urgent emergencies. Immediately begin flushing your eye with clean water for at least 15 minutes and have someone call us while you do so. Prompt action is the key to preventing long-term corneal damage.

Infections & "Pink Eye"

While highly contagious and uncomfortable, most infections aren't immediate threats to sight, but they do require a medical diagnosis. We can determine if your "Pink Eye" is viral, bacterial, or allergic and provide the correct prescription to get you feeling better fast.

Concussions & Brain Injuries

Vision is deeply connected to the brain. If you have suffered a concussion or head injury, your eye health is a vital part of your recovery. We provide advanced neurological vision screenings to ensure your eyes and brain are communicating correctly during your healing process.

We Are Here for You

Whether it's a shattered lens, a lost contact stuck in the eye, or a sudden painful infection, you don’t have to face it alone. Our team is trained to handle ocular emergencies with compassion and precision.
